Congress has passed a landmark bill giving the Food and Drug Administration the authority to require drug manufacturers to test new medicines in children. The bill also gives the agency the power to require testing of older drugs widely prescribed to kids if companies don't do the studies voluntarily. More than half of medicines taken by children have not been tested in them for safety and effectiveness, said Dianne Murphy, director of pediatric drug development at the FDA. The drugs often are prescribed 'off-label,' which allows medicine to be given to children if it's safe for adults. But researchers have long warned that younger bodies react to drugs differently.
