Should schools press for balanced scheduling?

Balanced scheduling is a new trend that some schools in the Mid-West are considering to implement in the very near future. 1. There are four additional 2-week breaks throughout the school year besides Christmas and Thanksgiving. 2. One of those two weeks in a given 2-week 'break' is intersession week, where students who have the need to either advance, seek additional help, or catch up with school work, attend school for additional sessions. The intersession week is not mandatory. 3. There will be a 6-7 week summer break. School begins on the first Monday of August and ends on the second to the last Wednesday of June. 4. Those four breaks are spaced evenly throughout the school year, acting as divisions between quarters.
