THE US FDA has decided to allow the use of a tiny, implantable chip that enables a doctor to access a patient's medical records. In October, the FDA decided that the microchip was a regulated medical device if marketed 'to provide information to assist in the diagnosis or treatment of injury or illness'. It therefore needed to think about whether or not it was legal. One of the concerns was that the chip could be easily read and data may not actually be safe from prying eyes. It meant that Applied Digital, who made the chip, couldn't flog it to medical companies and could only install it for security, financial records, human and animal identification and safety applications. However the FDA action indicates the government thinks the medical information would be as secure as databases at doctors' offices, hospitals and health insurers.
