When you wash a big load of laundry, do you put the soap in all at once or do you put the soap out in different areas/sections?

I'm afraid the soap won't get to all of the laundry, so I throw it in a little at a time on the bottom, in the middle, then on top...basically just all around and not just in one spot. But I noticed the other day my mom just throws in all her laundry, then dumps a big scoop of soap on top.
