Chinese officials say separatist militants are returning to China from al-Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan to carry out terrorist attacks targeting the Beijing Olympics. They say that the militants are returning to Xinjiang, as well as directly across the isolated mountain ranges that separate China from Tajikistan and Afghanistan. A Chinese official who is familiar with China's counter terrorism planning described the militants as active, well-funded and determined to disrupt the Olympics. "The Xinjiang security situation is relatively serious, particularly in the Pamir Mountains in the south," the official told the Herald, on condition he would not be identified.
