If you had an 'intersex' baby, would wait to have surgery until the child was old enough to decide his/her own gender?

'Intersex' = unclear gender. WASHINGTON - It’s the first question new parents hear: girl or boy? But hundreds of babies are born each year where the gender isn’t clear. Prompt surgery to assign one was once the norm. But gender depends on more than anatomy or hormones. It also seems to stem from the very earliest brain development, researchers said Friday in urging doctors to hold off on the knife until children can determine their own sex.

I think the point here is they have both male and female sex organs so the biological sex is not clear.

I wouldn’t view it as a child choosing their gender. I would raise them according to their biological sex and not perform any unnecessary cosmetic surgeries, same as I would with any other child. However, if their development caused a medical problem, I would address that.
