I hear people all the time say things like, 'I tried drugs, but I was in college then' or 'I thought I was gay once, but it was when I was in college'. I'm just curious as to whether anyone thinks this is a valid excuse.

I think what they mean by that is “young and dumb.” It’s not an excuse, but sometimes it’s an explanation.
