Is the crown greater than the crowned?

'Crown' refers to the crown itself - is it's value greater than that conferred to the crowned? 'Crown' can also refer to the monarchy, or the title. Are titles greater than their bearers, or are they(titles) useless without them (bearers) and vice versa?
