Should Private Eddie Slovik, executed during WWII for desertion, be given a pardon?

Edward Donald Slovik was a private in the United States Army during World War II, and the first United States soldier to be executed for desertion since the American Civil War. Although 21,049 soldiers were given varying sentences for desertion during WWII, including 49 death sentences, only Slovik's death sentence was carried out. There have been no executions for desertion in the US armed forces since Slovik's. Although his wife and others have petitioned seven U.S. Presidents, including Ronald Reagan, George Bush and Bill Clinton, Slovik has not been pardoned.
