Should Halliburton pay back the $61 million it overcharged the government?

President Bush says if any company charged the U.S. government too much for services in Iraq, it must give back the money. Speaking to reporters in the White House Friday, Mr. Bush expressed confidence that an audit being conducted by the U.S. Defense Department will 'lay out the facts for everyone to see.' The Pentagon said this week it had evidence that the U.S. government may have been overcharged for fuel delivered in Iraq this year by Halliburton, a company run by Dick Cheney before he became vice president. The Pentagon said a Halliburton subsidiary failed to get a reasonable price for the fuel from a subcontractor in Kuwait and passed the additional charges - $61 million - on to the U.S. government. Mr. Bush says that if there was an overcharge, and he believes there was, he expects the 'money to be repaid.' Halliburton Chief Executive Dave Lesar says his company welcomes a thorough Pentagon review of the matter. The controversy has prompted criticism from opposition Democrats, who say the suspected overcharges demonstrate unacceptable links between the Bush administration and special interests.
