AP--Dollar per charge costs coach his job A Texas high school basketball coach resigned after being cited for violating amateur rules by paying players for good defense. Earl Carson, coach at Denison High School, located about 70 miles from Dallas, paid a player $1 every time the player drew a charging foul. Carson, who coached Denison for 17 seasons, averaged more than 20 wins a year. The 56-year-old coach came up with the plan after a 3-10 start. Denison won 12 of its last 17 games before losing in the playoffs. Carson said when the season was over he figured that he owed $23, divided among 12 players. 'I'm not going to try to fight anything on this,' Carson said. 'I did the crime, I need to do the time.'
