Are you non-American? Wanna help me with a mother`s day gift? - Mood:Good
Sunday December 27 20205:10:48 PM |
So whenever I tell my mom about a new person I'm talking to online from another country she asks me about their food. So I thought for a mother's day gift, I'd make a cookbook of recipes from friends around the world. You can contribute as much as you want. Ideally including photos and descriptions (and fun trivia!) but even just the recipe is fine. And I'll make the final cookbook available for everyone so you can buy one if you want.

Also, here's a song I wrote that I'm pretty proud of:

Hey if you guys give a sh*t about refugees and asylum seekers or whatever... - Mood:Good
Saturday August 24 20198:17:54 PM |
My brother is a lawyer and is planning to go down with a group of other lawyers in January to provide free legal representation for asylees. My spellcheck says that's not a word but I'm pretty sure it is. Anyway, I kinda think he just does this stuff to cement his position as the favorite son of my parents. But it's a good cause, and if you agree, you can donate here:

I donated 31 dollars because it was at $2,200 and I don't like non-prime numbers.... but it turns out 2,231 isn't prime either cause it's divisible by 23 and 97... so I guess I failed again.

Please someone make it prime for me. Some acceptable totals: 2237, 2239, 2243, 2251, 2267, 2269, 2273, 2281, 2287, 2293, 2297, 2309, 2311, 2333, 2339, 2341, 2347, 2351, 2357, 2371, 10007.

I get that that last number is a stretch... but not if you really love asylees...

Concert - Mood:Good
Thursday August 01 201910:28:45 PM |
So I haven't gone to a concert in like... 4 or 5 years because I know that with my amnesia, I won't remember anything that happens I know the first real concert I ever went to was with Lilly and Emma (from YT) but I don't remember anything about the concert. And when I was looking thru my old journals I found myself talking about lots of concerts that I didn't even remember going to,..

But last christmas, my brother bought me a gift certificate for a comapny that owns several venues here (including Merriweather Post Pavilion, famous from that Animal Collective song).

And I finally found a concert that appealed to me. Bon Iver, with Feist opening. But the gift card couldn't be used online, so I mailed it to my brother who lives much closer to the venue. And when he got there they said it was sold out.

So remember when I said I was gonna kintsugi my mom`s pot I broke? - Mood:Good
Friday June 21 20194:36:30 PM |
Probably not since I said it in OS and all you young whippersnappers wouldn't have seen it.

But... it turns out it's harder than I thought.

Turns out I'm really good at breaking things. Not so good at putting them back together. But if the idea is that highlighting the imperfections makes them more beautiful.. then I did a really f*cking beautiful job.

She seemed pretty happy to get it, but then I saw this:

Sometimes sh*t is just... sh*t... - Mood:Good
Wednesday June 19 20196:17:21 PM |
So even tho my boss kept moving up the timeline that he wanted me to finish my code by... I was doing OK... but then today I realized I was using old data, and my code didn't work at all on the current data.

I spent all day trying to fix that but finally he said to just use my data. And that worked fine on my own machine, but,...

Then when I tried to upload my app to the server, I couldn't get it to load. (I had to install Chrome for one thing, which was a pain in the ass...). It runs on the localhost without a problem, but can't be accessed from outside.

I even tried to setup my AWS server again as a backup but encountered way more problems.

So at this point I figure I've done all I could...

Really if he can connect to that server (which he should be able to) there won't be an issue... but I'm still not confident...

Competency = bad; fun = also bad - Mood:Good
Monday June 17 20198:33:52 PM |
Well I guess this is why you never show your boss what you can do... After I got this job, once I finished my initial task I sent some code showing a cool thing I figured out how to do. I think I've showed it here before... if not.. just drag the center and edge points of the circle and watch the chart update.

He liked that a lot. So then he said "we're now changing to this environment, can you make that code work there?" and after looking into it I said "we'll that's a much older JS version, I don't know if it will work..." and at our last meeting he said "keep working on it". Then today I get an email saying "I'm meeting with the clients on Friday, can you get it working by then?"

And I've actually gotten it partly there... but I dunno...

More super awesome map stuff - Mood:Good
Tuesday June 04 20199:06:38 PM |
So one of the main features my boss told the clients wanted was to have 2 different maps side by side, and to be able drag bar between them and swipe from one to the other. I'd seen it in some webmaps before but I'd never programmed anything like it. And I couldn't find any guides or samples for it either. I thought it would take weeks to do. But yesterday, after about 10 hours of work, I actually figured it

Then, before I tell my boss, he tells me that a phd student will be joining the project whose task will be that exact thing. He knew I was looking into it and said he'd tell her to ask me about what I found before she started. Do I tell her? Do I tell him?

Hey are any of you guys into Latvian themed death metal? - Mood:Good
Tuesday June 04 20197:30:15 PM |
My brother-in-law just released his first solo album. It's called "Dear Latvia" and is available on Spotify here. It's also on Google Play Music but I couldn't figure out how to link to that here. It's more of an EP than a full album... there are only 8 songs and they're all pretty short. I guess... it sounded like 1 long song to me.

But how can you go wrong with song titles like these?

Feedback wanted for a work thing - Mood:Good
Friday May 31 20199:52:05 PM |
So I'm sure you've all been waiting with bated breath (baited breath? baded breath? @*%UWFHVF breath?.... I'm pretty sure it's the last one...) to hear about my job.

So we're working with the School of Public Health to make an Environmental Justice Screening mapping application. They already had one for one county in MD, and California has their own (really amazing) version.., it's like the gold standard. And actually the EPA has one for the entire country so I don't even know why we're bothering... but I'm getting paid so I don't care.

Well I made all the maps and I've been relearning the JavaScript API.

Here's what I have so far:

So you start with a map of MD broken down into census tracts colored based on the percentage of sensitive populations.

Dino-turtle - Mood:Good
Wednesday May 29 20194:24:01 PM |
So a couple nights ago my neighbor came and told me there was a turtle in the street. I thought it might be one of mine that escaped years ago. But it was not. Not at all.

It was this:

Those don't really give you a sense of scale. It was 2 feet long and at least 40 or 50 pounds. I quickly recognized it as an alligator snapping turtle (tho I later learned a 10 year old girl who lives 2 houses down saw it earlier and identified it correctly... a blow to my reputation for
turtle expertise, but pretty impressive...)

Here is its tail:

It's basically a dinosaur.

Is it a bad idea to suggest to your boss that your work may be unnecessary? - Mood:Good
Wednesday May 22 20196:36:07 PM |
So I'm supposed to be updating Maryland's environmental justice and screening maps since the old versions only covered a few counties. But while working on that, I discovered the EPA already has an app covering all of America. All the data I'm supposed to be mapping is already included there, plus a lot of features we haven't even discussed.

California also has its own version,, but there's is absolutely beautiful and so detailed. I was given no information on where or when the data is from, but Cali's tells you exactly what it means, where and when it's from, and why it's included. I could understand making our own version if we're aiming for that standard, but otherwise...

Well I emailed him about it. I guess we'll see...

Not a great day - Mood:Depressed
Tuesday May 07 20191:29:34 PM |
I start driving to school, less than a minute after I leave I try to turn on a street. And this happens...

My car is on the right.

No one was injured but my car is f*cked up. Someone is coming to inspect it tomorrow and I don't know if I'll be able to go to school this week. That's not a big deal since my Thursday class already ended and has no final, I wasn't planning on going to my Friday lab either because they're easy, and tomorrow 1 teacher will just talk about his paper unrelated to the class, and my other 1will show us how to code which I'm already good at. But finals are in 2 weeks and I assume we're reviewing next week so I need to be able to drive again soon.

So many of the things - Mood:Sad
Wednesday May 01 20193:51:19 PM |
So my job was supposed to start today but I'm still waiting for my boss to send me the data and instructions. I guess I should email him? I went by his office after class but he wasn't there.

Also while I was waiting for my second class to start, I got an emergency alert email from my school saying there was a fire in the chemical and nuclear engineering building and to stay away. That seems like the last place you'd want a fire.

This is my mom's cat Basie. He would constantly bother me whining for food and when I gave him food he would just sniff it and walk away. I started to hate him because he interrupted everything I did. Today we found out he has a 7 cm cancerous mass in his stomach. They don't know how long he has and there's nothing we can do. I fell like sh*t.

Remember that internship I interviewed for last month? - Mood:Good
Tuesday April 23 20196:44:30 PM |
He asked me to email him some examples of websites I programmed but I couldn't find anything good so I never did. I hadn't heard from him since then so I assumed I didn't get it. Then today I got an email from him offering it to me. I meet with him tomorrow to work out the details and I start next Wednesday, so that's pretty cool.

In other news, my latest tropical fruit to experiment with is this:

A pepino melon. I've been waiting for it to ripen for a few weeks so I have't tried it yet. When I went to google how to tell if it was ripe and to eat it I was distracted and instead of typing "how to eat a pepino" I typed "how to eat a penis". Luckily I caught it before pressing enter. I wouldn't want that in my search history...

WW2 - Mood:Good
Friday April 19 201910:59:29 PM |
So I've long wondered what most countries did during WW2 and it seems like the truth is most countries did nothing and waited it out. Then there were a lot of countries who officially supported the allies but didn't send any troops. This is bizarre to me because in general I'm a pacifist, but I'd be the first to sign against the f*cking

First glimpse of my turtle since Fall - Mood:Good

Apparently I`m famous - Mood:Good
Monday April 15 20193:41:15 PM |
At brunch yesterday I noticed several people staring at me. Then when my dad left the table briefly someone pulled him aside and talked to him for a while. When he came back he said that she had asked him if I was the guy from American Idol.

I don't look anything like that! Why do people seem to think all redheads look the same?

Do you think you can make real friendships online? - Mood:Good
Saturday April 13 20199:49:30 PM |
I've been using this language learning app that connects you to people based on what languages you know and want to learn with other people based on languages they know and want to learn. And so far it's been great. I've met a lot of people I really liked talking to.

But then I met this Polish girl. At first I really liked talking to her. But tonight we started talking about how she thought you can't really be 'friends' with anyone you haven't met in real life. So I said "Well the best friend I ever had was a woman I talked to for like 10 years, everyday" and she asked "did you meet her in real life?" and I said "well I planned to, I bought a train ticket but she had emergency surgery and before we could reschedule she died" and she said "WELL THEN YOU WEREN'T REALLY FRIENDS!". She's the assh*le here right?

Is Grad school worth it? - Mood:Confused
Thursday April 11 20199:21:16 AM |
So I finally graduate this Fall and I had figured I'd just search for any GIS jobs and end up in a field I'm not really interested in but that I'd enjoy GIS enough that it'd be worth it.

But recently another possibility has occurred to me. Aside from space, evolutionary biology, and linguistics, one of my favorite subjects has always been ancient history/archaeology. I've noticed a lot of the promotional fliers in the Geography building here list 'discovering ancient civilizations' as one of the reasons to learn geography and GIS, but I've never seen them offer classes related to that.

Well last semester, a professor who taught my brother and sister Greek at their college in Nebraska joined the Classics faculty here. SInce they were close to him (he was invited to my sister's wedding reception but got stuck in an airport, he sent her a 400 roman bust as a gift, tho), I'd go ask him.

Do I have any musical talent? - Mood:Hopeful
Saturday April 06 20191:18:56 AM |
I've been trying to compose piano songs for about a year. I've nearly completed about 7 but I've never been fully satisfied with any.

This is the first one I attempted:

(yes I like triplets)

Should I keep trying or just give up?
Please tell me the honest truth. Unless it's negative. In that case tell me sweet, sweet lies.

(Also I composed it but I still can't play it. That's something else entirely)

Ketamine and more blood - Mood:Good
Thursday April 04 20197:57:29 PM |
So my psychiatrist was more receptive to the ketamine idea than I expected. She didn't help much but she basically said "well it works for some people. I don't prescribe it but I can look around for someone who does if you want." I told her I had already found a couple clinics here but was nervous about calling them and she basically just moved onto a different topic and later said I should keep looking into it.

Then my usual pharmacy didn't have one of the medications for one of the prescriptions she gave me so I had to go to one in a nearby grocery store. Where I saw this:

(on the right: for all the people who want 3 different flavors of plain! They also have a chocolate version which has milk, dark, and... chocolate chocolate. That's really what it says.)

Mangoes, mangoes, and blood...y mangoes - Mood:Good
Tuesday April 02 20196:36:34 PM |
I went to a Punjabi grocery today to get paneer and to see what mango products they had.

I'd never heard of mango pickles before so I decided to try this. I got the only one that didn't say 'hot and spicy' on it so I thought I was safe... (I really hate spicy food).

And holy sh*t it was spicy. My mouth still hurt an hour later.

Luckily I could wash it down with this:

I also got a fresh mango and this is the result of me trying to peel it:

Random intense depression today - Mood:Depressed
Monday April 01 20199:18:47 PM |
I was sitting in my first class this morning and all of the sudden I got this intense burst of depression, worse than I've felt in many months, maybe even years. It had no connection to anything that was going on in my class or my life but all I could think about was wanting to die.

I thought it might be related to getting drunk last Friday for the first time in months. Like I've heard people who do a lot of ecstasy on weekends will feel like sh*t the next Tuesday due to something with the brain chemicals. Maybe this is something similar? Tho I've never felt it before. It took so much effort to stay thru the end of my class, and then the hour before my next class, and then that one.

But the teacher of my only class tomorrow sent an email saying she has to cancel class because her daughter was sick. At first some people thought it was an April Fools thing but apparently it's real.
