Teach, I'm not even going to begin explaining why I found your your post so condescending, hypocritical and offensive (not that I believe for a moment that you meant it to come across that way). I'm not going to talk about it because it's going to involve discussing feminism- in a public forum, which leaves me at risk of being labelled a radical- even if what I've got to say really isn't.

This is how women get silenced. I know that it's happened, I know that I'm allowing it to happen, but I just don't think it's worth it- and I really don't want to get caught up in a teachvsdacashesque back and forth about semantics. That just undermines the point even further.

Then you shouldn't treat me as if you do believe it, and you should graciously acknowledge you did.
10 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Saturday 2/4/12 - 11:19:26 AM EST (GMT-5)
No, I shouldn't.
10 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Saturday 2/4/12 - 11:21:35 AM EST (GMT-5)
You know you should, but I understand your need to put on a show here. Go ahead.

Awww, sweetie, you're spending too much time thinking about this. You don't have to go digging up your backhanded apology to others while passive-aggressively continuing to attack me for my sake.

Is someone a bit butthurt?

(it was an acknowledgement, not an apology)

Honey, it's okay. I'm not expecting anything mature, gracious, or conciliatory from you. You don't have to defend your refusal to behave that way or pretend something else qualifies. It's okay.
10 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Saturday 2/4/12 - 12:15:58 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think someone is butthurt.

Newt, it's pretty well documented that there are hormonal and structural differences, as well as a vast average difference of nerve endings and other sensory inputs.

That'senough of a difference to be the difference between a schizophrenic and a normal person. Also, children's brains are structurally more alike, not more different (and it makes sense because that's usually when their hormone soup mix is closest to the same. Different hormone mixture always means different brain structure.

Stop talking sh*t Kepi.

Major hormonal difference between males and females are the amounts of estrogen and testosterone we carry.

This only really affects reproduction directly.

You could argue that it has an implication on other aspects of life but you wouldn't be able to draw any specific conclusions because then other stimuli muddies the waters. Certainly not to the point where you could justify specific gender roles.

And if you're going to start justifying stuff in the name of average difference, well then let's just ban all white people from sports where they are outclassed by black people, and ban them from the classroom where they are outperformed by East Asian people.

Because that's the sort of line your taking when you start justifying stuff based on averages.

Ok ok ok, enough dickassery has been flyin' around, I have to interject. Especially as I don't stand with either camp.

Trying to disclaim Kepi's stance on hormonal and structural differences would be vain, yet trying to demonstrate their validity when it comes to influence upon behavior is an impossible task on a greater scope, and a meaningless one when it boils down to details.

Most actual and verified findings lead to believe that the main differences between male / female go so far back as to not be influenced by societal values. Our genetic make up stands on 100 000 years of history, yet we have been civilized for barely a fraction of that. So man's sense of orientation will be influenced with the stars, the course of the sun, etc. (we used to be hunters) and women's will be grounded in visual keypoints (gatherers)

To this day these kind of cleavages endure, because in some fashion our genders have been 'engineered' that way. (NOT making a case for intelligent design here...) But mainly those differences are of aptitude, ability and to an extent affect how we perceive the world.

However they have no bearing as to the value one brings to one's community, or to the specific role they should play in it. Now is it wrong to expect someone to behave in a way that demonstrates and utilizes their abilities? I think not. I guess that's the reason you see less women on construction sites or in engineering firms yet so few guys in specialized education and so on...

It just seems a fair bet to assume people, according to their gender, upbringing, etc. will be drawn towards something that fits their skill set.

But to pigeonhole them to specific roles upon a pre-existing perception of 'how things should be' is demagogy. Period.

I wish there was a law that would prevent organizations who don't allow women to reach leading positions to be classified as charity.
