Was surprised by how many people got this wrong. Interested to see if YT is smarter.

This is actually a much better one than the other one. I actually settled on one answer in about 2 seconds, asked myself, "How could anyone end up w/ that other answer?" Then in figuring out how anyone else could be so dumb, realized it was the correct answer.

Glad to see a 30+ man can do basic maths... dont be too proud of yourself it is only BASIC maths now.

"Then in figuring out how anyone else could be so dumb"
withh an ego and attitude like yours lets hope you're not a school teacher

Once out of school, most folks forget everything that doesn't have to do with their field of endeavor. as a science teacher, I'm amazed at how much about earth science (star colors, etc) I have forgotten because I don't teach that stuff.

I wouldn't expect a High School English teacher to remember algebra very well. But I *would* expect kids in 6-12th grade to know it intimately since they should be using it almost daily.

Personally, as a HS science teacher, if I had to write that equation on the board, I would use parenthesis to make it more clear the order of operation.

How'd you miss that that was a set-up for self-deprecation?

If Google's correct, I did it right.

Like so many things you'll find on the internet, Google is wrong on this one.
10 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 5/4/11 - 1:57:45 PM EST (GMT-5)
Are you sure? Google's giving me the correct answer.
10 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 5/4/11 - 2:00:49 PM EST (GMT-5)
53% of people think it's 9? was expecting more.
10 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 5/4/11 - 2:02:10 PM EST (GMT-5)
Google, is definitely wrong on this one.
10 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 5/4/11 - 2:02:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
Are you doing a search or using the calculator function?
10 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 5/4/11 - 2:03:07 PM EST (GMT-5)
Ahh, I didn't think about that, I just did a search.

This is a less ambiguous presentation of the problem as given. Unfortunately, it makes the discussion much less interesting.

^That would be.... a inaccurate presentation of the problem as given.

No, it's not. Implicit multiplication is given the same precedence as multiplication in general.
10 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 5/4/11 - 2:18:02 PM EST (GMT-5)
The only way the 6 and 2 could be paired that way would be if they were in parentheses.
10 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 5/4/11 - 2:18:36 PM EST (GMT-5)
No; division and multiplication are of equal precedence. Therefore, when both are present, operators function left to right by convention.
10 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 5/4/11 - 2:24:24 PM EST (GMT-5)
Which would be true if everything after the division sign wasn't part of the denominator.
10 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 5/4/11 - 2:25:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
That's the point. It's not. Juxtaposition notation is equivalent to infix notation for multiplication. It's the same as writing

6/2*(1+2)

By the way, if CD stops by, the reverse polish equivalent is:

6 2 ÷ 1 2 + x

Hmmm, not to just admit that I was wrong, because there would be no learning in that, but
I guess it is possible. I'll have to go ask a professor of course, not that I don't trust your maths, just need more reliable proof. This is a sad day for me.

If it's any help, SpikedMath just did a comic on this yesterday after the author was frustrated with it.

this is the exact reason my dad was upset at one of my math teachers, because he failed to tell us that division and multiplication were of equal precedence.
