Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill were multilayered but not very philosphical yet I still enjoyed them.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 10/11/06 - 8:11:56 AM EST (GMT-5)
Multilayered, although some stories try so hard to surprise you it has the opposite effect. Oceans 11 springs to mind.

Sometimes the simplest stories are the most multilayered and philosophical - 'A Little Prince', for example.

I agree, simplistic stories with deeper undertones are the best.

I'd go for the multilayered philosophical ones.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 10/14/06 - 3:56:14 AM EST (GMT-5)
Multilayered and philosophical, they work the brain.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 10/14/06 - 10:14:59 AM EST (GMT-5)
Multilayered if I can understand what's going on.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 10/14/06 - 10:34:23 AM EST (GMT-5)
Both. I like when auther's can hide multiple layers within a straitfoward story.

"Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy"
"The 400 Pound CEO"
Most Stephen King novels.
"The Importance of Being Ernest"

Varies on my mood. Usually like straight forward. But, not like I'm a child, you know?
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 10/14/06 - 10:02:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
Multilayered philisophical. It's always interesting even if I don't really get it.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Saturday 10/14/06 - 10:36:13 PM EST (GMT-5)
I like nonfiction best. Of the choices I prefer straightforward stories with deeper undertones, but I do hate it when people take a simple story and turn it into a philosophical story.
15 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Sunday 10/15/06 - 8:51:11 PM EST (GMT-5)
Most of the time I read straightforward stories, but once in a while I enjoy stretching my brain muscles with a deeper one.

No one is better than the other, study enough Literature and it's really hard to say that one "type" of writing is better than another, although preferences to arise in more narrowly defined categories.

for some reason this question irritates the f*ck out of me. mainly because i can't decide what is meant by 'multilayered and philosophical'. it sounds kind of pretentious.

What I mean is that some books just tell a story, whereas others either have a message that is meant to be taken beyond the story and applied to some other context, or (like HoL) they tell several stories at once which are embedded into one another.
