Suppose you could erase bad memories from your mind. Suppose, as in a recent movie, your brain could be wiped clean of sad and traumatic thoughts. That is science fiction. But real-world scientists are working on the next best thing. They have been testing a pill that, when given after a traumatic event like rape, may make the resulting memories less painful and intense.

Will it work? It is too soon to say. Still, it is not far-fetched to think that this drug someday might be passed out along with blankets and food at emergency shelters after disasters like the tsunami or Hurricane Katrina.

15 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Monday 1/16/06 - 6:08:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't think I would use them myself, but I can see why some people might want them, and I think it wouldn't be a bad thing to make them avaliable to rape victims and such.

Every memory, good and bad, makes up who we are. We can't just erase what we don't want. People have all ready tried it, it's called denial and it seriously messes people up.
15 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Tuesday 1/17/06 - 2:38:44 PM EST (GMT-5)

15 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Saturday 2/11/06 - 10:03:09 PM EST (GMT-5)
Pain is what shapes our reality, so it should not be used. What we should be working on is a drug to suppress or re-orientate our violence and anger.

The pills don't make you forget anything, they make the memories of the experience less painful to remember.

If I wanted to do that I would just smoke a huge joint, I wouldn't need pills to help numb my mind.

15 yrs ago - Friday 7/21/06 - 1:50:56 AM EST (GMT-5)
I wouldn't want to forget how I became the person I am today. I couldn't take one.
15 yrs ago - Friday 7/21/06 - 1:57:47 AM EST (GMT-5)
they are worth researching but I wouldn't want to be in the test group--and in response to the above comment. If you were a quivering wreck because of one event you may want to reduce the effect of that one event. right?
15 yrs ago - Friday 7/28/06 - 5:56:37 PM EST (GMT-5)
it's the bad experiences, along with the good, that make you who you are. if you were to take those away you would be a completely different person. it's a good thing if that's what you want i suppose...
15 yrs ago - Friday 7/28/06 - 6:08:25 PM EST (GMT-5)
If you went through something REALLY terrible, it would probably be a good idea. I wouldn't think it would be used on just anyone who asked.

I guess it depends on how effective it is, too.
