Doesn't look good. The UN reunification proposal was shot down again on April 25. btw, Greeks, Turks, Brits and the UN care. It's a source of violent conflict in the Mediterranean.

I have to admit I don't know anything about the conflict, if there is one. Maybe someone who does could share. Or I'll go look it up...

More progress has been made in the last three or so years than I ever expected to see, but it will be a long time before a proper reunification takes place, *if* it takes place. I crossed into the North a year ago, and it's as if it never developed since 1974. The South, of course, is booming, as it ever has been. At best, there are huge inequalities in the socioeconomic climates on either side of the green line.

16 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Wednesday 1/5/05 - 7:42:01 PM EST (GMT-5)
Actually, you're right - Syria. And Lebanon. Israel's more southeast.

I lived in Cyprus when I was a child from 1976 to 1979, just after the island was split in two. The hatred between the Turks and Greeks seems to be just as bad now as it was then. Apparently nobody wants to back down.
16 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Friday 3/4/05 - 12:48:39 PM EST (GMT-5)
It's not a hatred any more, really. Some Greek-Cypriots who were there at the time and lost a lot still carry a lot of rancour, but it's always been more directed at the Turkish government than anything, and this is especially true of the younger generation. The way people have been with the opening of the Green Line for the first time since the invasion, about a year and a half ago, has not indicated hatred, but a determination to resolve the problem. It's not surprising, though, that Greek-Cypriots will reject a resolution that they do not feel is fair, but this is not directed at the Turks living in the north.

I don't think it'll ever unify. Which is sad because I want to go up to the Turkish side some time but I can't.
