WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Choosing a diet soft drink over a regular, sugar-packed beverage may not be the best way to fight obesity, according to new research from Purdue University. But the researchers said this doesn't mean you should grab a regularly sweetened soft drink instead.

'Incidence of overweight and obesity has also increased markedly during this period,' they said. 'Our hypothesis is that experience with these foods interferes with the natural ability of the body to use sweet taste and viscosity to gauge caloric content of foods and beverages. When you substitute artificial sweetener for real sugar, however, the body learns it can no longer use its sense of taste to gauge calories. So, the body may be fooled into thinking a product sweetened with sugar has no calories and, therefore, people overeat.'

Do you think artificial sugars like Equal and Sweet & Low are contributing to how fat America is?

No, but I think they are contributing to other health problems.

Yes. They give people a false sense of security.

"Oh! If I use artificial sweeteners instead of sugar, the dish is healthier and so I can eat as much as I like!"

Artificial sweeteners aren't the main cause to the obesity epidemic in America, but they do make their contribution.

17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Tuesday 12/21/04 - 3:51:52 PM EST (GMT-5)

americans are fat because they stuff food in their mouths like they wont have anymore, then say they will start their diet tommorow. We have no one to blame but themselves

17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Saturday 4/30/05 - 1:45:47 AM EST (GMT-5)
There are so many factors to consider, including portion control, so how can you even try to blame one single item.
17 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Sunday 5/22/05 - 4:33:24 AM EST (GMT-5)
it's all about the overeating! people should stop blaming the fattening foods!
16 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Monday 6/27/05 - 1:57:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
Maybe just a small contribution. All the "DIET" foods they aren't so low fat but people think they are so they think, "Oh it's low fat I'll have a truckload of those at dinner then!"
16 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Wednesday 6/29/05 - 12:52:09 AM EST (GMT-5)
I truly dislike advertisements that give the impression of healthy eating, like products that say no fat but are loaded with sugar, or low GI but are loaded with fat, or coco pops saying a bowl of coco pops will give you 1/3 RDI calcium... yeah, from MILK!
But the bigger problem is people's lack of exercise. I have more problems gaining weight than losing it, and I find it difficult to keep up any kind of exercise regime to meet my goals.
15 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Sunday 3/18/07 - 1:10:49 PM EST (GMT-5)
Partially, but look at fast food. That's a huge contributor.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 1/18/09 - 12:29:36 PM EST (GMT-5)
