No, but I think they are contributing to other health problems.

Yes. They give people a false sense of security. "Oh! If I use artificial sweeteners instead of sugar, the dish is healthier and so I can eat as much as I like!" Artificial sweeteners aren't the main cause to the obesity epidemic in America, but they do make their contribution.

There are so many factors to consider, including portion control, so how can you even try to blame one single item.

Maybe just a small contribution. All the "DIET" foods they aren't so low fat but people think they are so they think, "Oh it's low fat I'll have a truckload of those at dinner then!"

I truly dislike advertisements that give the impression of healthy eating, like products that say no fat but are loaded with sugar, or low GI but are loaded with fat, or coco pops saying a bowl of coco pops will give you 1/3 RDI calcium... yeah, from MILK! But the bigger problem is people's lack of exercise. I have more problems gaining weight than losing it, and I find it difficult to keep up any kind of exercise regime to meet my goals.

Partially, but look at fast food. That's a huge contributor.
