LAUDERHILL, Florida (Reuters) -- A plaque intended to honor black actor James Earl Jones at a Florida celebration of the life of Martin Luther King instead paid tribute to James Earl Ray, the man who killed the black civil rights leader, officials said Wednesday.

The embarrassing mix-up was caused by an error by the plaque's designer, the owner of the company that ordered the plaque said. It was being corrected in time for Jones' visit to the Fort Lauderdale suburb Saturday.

Over a background featuring stamps of famous black Americans, including King, the erroneous plaque read, 'Thank you James Earl Ray for keeping the dream alive.'

He was the man who shot and killed King in a Memphis hotel in 1968. King is honored across the nation on January 21, Martin Luther King Day.

19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Saturday 12/7/02 - 11:56:59 AM EST (GMT-5)
Yikes! That's bad. I don't know whether it was an accident or not. It WAS in the south, so maybe it wasn't. *shrugs* I don't know. Either it was a dreadful mistake or a terribly tasteless action.
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Saturday 12/7/02 - 12:05:23 PM EST (GMT-5)
What exactly is that supposed to mean Bloodklotz?
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Saturday 12/7/02 - 5:12:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
i don't appreciate that remark, bloodklotz. there is just as much hate in the rest of the country (world, even) as there is in the south. comments like that are what keep the negative stereotypes alive.
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Saturday 12/7/02 - 5:45:33 PM EST (GMT-5)

19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 12/10/02 - 1:20:51 PM EST (GMT-5)
But there's still a lot of bitterness in the south, more so than the north. That was what my comment ment, no offence intended.
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 12/10/02 - 1:31:25 PM EST (GMT-5)
there's not as much "bitterness" as you think. the idea that there is comes from people making comments and such like that. i could go on a tirade here, but i'm not going to. just please try to stop the stereotyping, ok?
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Thursday 10/28/04 - 2:15:07 AM EST (GMT-5)
I'd put my money on accidental. That'd be something I would do
16 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Sunday 1/1/06 - 2:23:12 PM EST (GMT-5)

16 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Sunday 1/1/06 - 2:34:08 PM EST (GMT-5)
^^ And it never once occurred to me that it might be on purpose. I'm glad I don't think that way.

How should I know?

Sounds a little Freudian to me.

16 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Friday 1/6/06 - 9:59:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
I highly doubt it was done on purpose.

Why? There are still plenty of people out there more than racist enough to want to do it.

16 yrs ago - Wednesday 5/10/06 - 12:23:08 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think (or strongly HOPE at least) that it was an honest mistake, because it's one that I've heard people make from time to time.
15 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Wednesday 6/21/06 - 7:19:56 AM EST (GMT-5)
