and i like the whole thing with the englishness and strawberries and cream and fancy pants venue and the bbc basically drops everything else in favour of covering it 24/7

Wimbledon is the only tennis tournament that receives extensive live TV coverage in the UK.
It's a British institution, along with The Grand National Steeplechase, The Oxford and Cambridge Boat race and The London Marathon.

Interesting. I guess in that case my question for skyfish should be, why Wimbledon and not The Grand National Steeplechase, The Oxford and Cambridge Boat race and The London Marathon?

Well Wimbledon goes on for 2 weeks. The other events are on Saturday afternoon in the spring with the Marathon on Sunday morning. The pace of those events isn't quite the same. He's talks about the "Englishness"of it. Wimbledon is at the height of summer and you can bask in the sunshine to the echo of racket on ball (if it doesn't rain), drink Pimms and eat strawberries and cream and try not to fart loudly in case the umpire sternly says quiet please.
In 1977 when Virginia Wade reached the final, I was serving in the Army in Germany and we were given the afternoon off to watch the match. That didn't happen for the World Cup.

If its being the only one I ever happen to catch means anything, it's not much different here. I mean, you can find the other majors if you look for them, but I generally see Wimbledon w/o ever really looking for it.
