I think instead of giving these people who have no jobs money they should be giving them gift cards for places like grocery stores, gas stations, salvation armies. I know too many people who get their welfare cheque and go waste it on beer, then sit on their front lawns all day.. My mother used to be on government assistance and she was a single mother of three girls and working her butt off to make sure we went places in life.

"bare minimum to survive" is too vague.

If referring to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, you can not buy alcohol or tobacco.

I say no. The gift cards are a good idea. People will probably just sell them for reall money though.

Why not just keep them in some kind of prison where you can monitor their activities?

For the most part, they already are. Government assistance does not make anyone rich. The key is providing help to people who need it, withhold it from people who do not, and make it a pathway to the highest possible level of independence.

You can't buy alcohol or tobacco w/ food stamps already. I think that's appropriate. I don't really have an issue w/ something like ice cream or cake mix being available. Poor people's kids have birthdays, too, after all.

I do think healthy stuff ought to be promoted. The poor aren't starving to death like they were 50 years ago, but they are probably hit harder by the obesity epidemic than other socioeconomic classes, largely due to the kind of cheap, crap food that gets govt subsidies.

Ooo this is a good idea, we can then use them as unpaid labour, build some big roads and push our economy into profits.

Then we can start reducing the food they're given, the invisible hand will ensure the strongest survive.

Now all we need is a name....
