Like I care if a bunch of people were killed there. I'll change the carpets.

Have they caught the perpetrator of the murders yet? That might make a difference.

So kill some people and you can buy their house at $30K below market? What's the catch?

I'm not getting murdered. I am not superstitious.

The catch is probably going to jail for life (if you're lucky).

Yeah, thanks, wanderer.

I'd care about whether or not the killer had been caught, and how long ago the murders happened.

I don't want to be surrounded by murderers.

I however don't believe that the murders themselves have 'tainted' the house in any way, so if the murders having happened there is the issue in question, I'd buy the house.

Well as long as the murderers have been dealt with, then I'm find with it. I'd just keep it secret from everyone else...nobody needs to know.

"The catch is probably going to jail for life (if you're lucky)."

Depending on location, this could be statistically unlikely. Homicide clearance rates in the US are falling.

Nearly 185,000 killings in the US went unsolved from 1980 to 2008.

Interesting- - that seems to correspond to the increase in home ownership rates from 1980 to 2008...

I'm guessing that if you own a home over a certain number of years in age, at least one person will have died there. As long as the murderer isn't likely to return, I don't think it would bother me.
11 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Thursday 6/23/11 - 3:30:57 PM EST (GMT-5)
Aside from the whether or not the murderer had been caught, I would think about how long ago it had happened and how the community was dealing with it. I don't really want to live in an area where people are still shell shocked, and I could see how that would also effect the re-sale value when I moved.

My brother ended up with the apartment the Israeli athletes that were killed in the Munich Olympics Massacre in 1972 had stayed in when he did his post doc there. It was a little weird, on the anniversary people would leave flowers at their door.

There's been some funky stuff done on how moral actions relate to judgements of physical purity/cleanliness. Being exposed to moral violations primes notions of physical cleanliness, and prompts physical cleaning behaviours (e.g. people wash their hands after reading stories about bad moral acts; the 'Macbeth effect').

I know some people who look at similar stuff in regards to objects, like whether people would feel uncomfortable handling an item they were told formerly belonged to a murderer. There does seem to be some kind of intuition that things are 'tainted' by actions in and around them.

With practical issues, I assume otherwise perfect means low crime rate etc. in the area, so as others said it's just about any continued risk from the killer for me (was he caught, might he return etc.).

Yes, but you buy a baseball bat and guns :)
11 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Thursday 6/23/11 - 7:16:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'd say yes, just because the murderer would have to have some reason to kill those poeple besides just going, "Hey, I'm going to kill anyone who steps foot in this house!"

Hell yeah I would.

Then I'd put the song "talking to my dead friends" by The Saps to piss off all the ghosts, and then rent the place out to ghost hunter TV shows to pay the mortgage and up the property value amongst hipsters.

I'd have to call in the Ghost Adventures crew first.

Not Ghost Hunters, those guys are losers.
