Parenthesis will get you through your day, don't do brackets unless you need them.
10 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Monday 5/9/11 - 7:51:54 PM EST (GMT-5)
I use brackets more than parentheses, but I don't find either pretentious.

(No.)

Outside of citations and mathematical equations, I can't think of a good reason to use them. I don't think they're pretentious, just unnecessary and usually incorrect.

They're elitist on here.

But I call many things elitist.

this
I use them in chemistry (designating concentration and in equations) and in notetaking.

years ago, I used brackets in place of parentheses because I found them aesthetically unpleasing, but I no longer do that in favor of correct grammar.

how so? I use them as a fluid connection between two independent clauses...sometimes a conjunction just doesn't function as well or make sense, and that connection can be important.
also, they're very easy to use, so I have a hard time seeing how they could be pretentious.

That's because I was being sarcastic dear.

As are apostrophes. The name itself reeks of pomp and false superiority.

I use brackets all the time. I don't worry about what is or isn't pretentious.

Only if I don't like that person.

I think it's part of the big anti-education, anti-PC-for-the-sake-of-it movement that anything constituting an accuracy qualifies as "pretentious." I blame Tim Allen's "Home Improvement" character and Al Gore.

Using proper grammar is not pretentious. Correcting other people's grammar outside certain contexts is indeed pretentious.

Just to note, it's common to refer to parenthesis as brackets in the UK. I assume that's what Fishie means.

They have their place, but they can reflect some not-great habits. In the interests of conciseness, it's worth considering why you're including them and whether they actually add to the message you're trying to convey. If the information is important, perhaps it's worth restructuring the sentence so that it isn't portrayed as a sidenote.

I probably overuse them tbh. For clarity and context, I often elaborate or give examples on what I write, which often ends up with it being longer than it really needs to be.

Ah, I didn't know that.

Yep. Stylistically, they're questionable and should be used thoughtfully and sparingly if at all. "Pretentious"? I still don't see it.

I've never used brackets. I only use parenthesis.
