Here's one story from the New York Times. The Strobels had a two-bedroom apartment, two cars and full-time jobs that left them in a "work-spend treadmill." So they quit. They donated their stuff, got rid of their cars and downsized to a 400-square foot studio. Mrs. Strobel whittled her possessions down to 100 items.

Their families called them crazy...at first. But it turns out their tale has a happy ending. They work less, they're out of debt, they have more time and money to spend on vacations, and they're just plain happier. The Strobels are not a statistically anomaly, either. The Times reports that new studies back this up -- buying more stuff really doesn't make us happier. And the AARP reports this in a recent story, too.

I don't think counting all the things in my apartment would take that long, and wouldn't reach 100, if you don't count papers for university and stuff like that.

100 for your life isn't much. Don't forget about clothes, personal hygeine stuff, furniture to sit on, computers/technology, food ... break it down and 100 items isn't a lot.

Only 100 possessions including like dishes and furniture and clothes and things like that? I think I could downsize but I do enjoy having things so maybe 200 things lol ?
11 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Monday 8/16/10 - 2:17:30 PM EST (GMT-5)
No I dont think so.

Meaning if one of those possessions broke, I could replace it?
Sure.
I don't see why not.
We're all dead anyways.

i am guessing each food ingredient doesn't count as a possession?
what does count as one thing?

the point of the article is to simplify your life, not micromanage it... jeez

easily
I mean I probably have more than that at the moment
but most of it is lying in closets and drawers
y'know, books, clothes I barely wear
stuff like that

not like it's clinging to my karma or anything
just happens to be there at this time
11 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 8/17/10 - 5:30:23 PM EST (GMT-5)
Easy.
11 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 8/17/10 - 5:39:08 PM EST (GMT-5)
I bought more than 300 possessions today. In fact I bought about 450.

If you break it down into just clothing you'd be hard pressed not to have 20.
For cooking and eating you would need at least the same
add washing and cleaning and there isn't much room for stuff like computers, cars and tv's.
11 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 8/17/10 - 5:56:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
What did you buy man?

I've lived with much less than 100 possessions before and would have a real easy time doing it again. But I have to agree that it takes a frugal mentality, and where I'd be missing most is probably kitchen ware.

No, I because I own over a hundred books and I wouldn't be able to part with any of them.
11 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 8/17/10 - 11:38:57 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes I could live with only 100 items.
11 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Thursday 8/19/10 - 5:20:21 PM EST (GMT-5)
If I had to, I probably could. I wouldn't choose to though.
10 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Thursday 7/14/11 - 9:48:52 PM EST (GMT-5)
I wouldn't want to, but yeah, I probably could live with just 100 items.
10 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Thursday 7/14/11 - 9:53:13 PM EST (GMT-5)
Anyone could. But why would they want to?
10 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Friday 7/15/11 - 3:11:46 AM EST (GMT-5)
Yes, what makes it hard is books and clothing-those add up.

Probably. Especially if I condense most books into an e-reader!
