A British lobbying group has criticized a fire department for spending six hours on the rescue of a pet duck trapped in a pond's overflow pipe. A five-man team of Gloucestershire firefighters dug a trench to free a pet duck, Brownie, from the pipe.

However, a spokeswoman for lobbying group TaxPayers' Alliance criticized the firefighters' actions. "Whilst no one likes to see a duck suffering, animal rescue is not the central job of the fire service," she said. "In this case there were no emergency calls pending, but calls can crop up at the last minute which could be much more pressing than the rescue of a duck."

Should firefighters stop 'wasting taxpayer money' by saving animals?

Oh, what garbage. I'd love to see how those same people react when their pet Yorkie is caught in a flood drain.

True, it probably shouldn't be the responsibility of the fire department to rescue animals, but animal control units usually don't have the equipment for emergencies like this (jaws of life, power tools, fully-equipped firetrucks, etc), and the fire department does. Unless they'd like to pay a substantial increase in taxes to pay for a specialized animal rescue department, they should just shut up.

That's sick, man. So animals deserve to die? Screw that, it's not a waste what so ever! Perhaps we should start leaving the welfare bums left to burn for wasting our tax payer dollars for refusing to get off their a$$ and work.

Uhhh, yeah and in that case the fire crew would leave the duck and go answer the emergancy call. What's the problem? The rig, crew and equipment all the cost same whether they're in use or not.

I had to call out the Fire Brigade a few weeks ago because there was a lot of smoke coming from my neighbours house. They arrived, put out their tumble dryer, rescued my other neighbours car and performed a fire safety check on about 5 houses on the terrace- all of which got new fire alarms installed, completely free.

They do great work in the community. It's not just about putting out fires- and if it means helping out a pet in distress from time to time, I'm happy for my taxes to pay for it.

No way! They can have every penny of my taxpayer money to save animals as long as they save humans, too!
