I had a friend who had a six year marriage that ended in divorce, yet she claimed it was a successful one. Other people say that a successful marriage must last until one person dies.

I definitely wouldn't consider her marriage successful. I'd say any marriage that ends in divorce before the kids are full grown is a failure. After the kids are gone, it can be a success, but only if the divorce is amicable. If you're spitting nails at each other, not so much.

Let's also consider marriages that end in early death. I often wonder if couples where one died young would still have been together in their old age.

Not necessarily, but I think perserverance is definitely one big part of a successful marriage

I have no clue. Successful until you die

If the goal of marriage is 'till death do us part', then I would argue it is only successful if that is how they part.

I suppose exceptions could be where it's just a marriage of convenience, in which case, one person getting their money or citizenship would be enough.

You have to be married forever.

Duh.

Yes exactly, that's the point of it after all. Otherwise don't do it.
