A unique strain of swine flu is the suspected killer of dozens of people in Mexico, where authorities have closed schools, museums, libraries and theaters in the capital to try to contain an outbreak that has spurred concerns of a global flu epidemic.

The worrisome new virus - which combines genetic material from pigs, birds and humans in a way researchers have not seen before - also sickened at least eight people in Texas and California, though there have been no deaths in the U.S.

"We are very, very concerned," World Health Organization spokesman Thomas Abraham said. "We have what appears to be a novel virus and it has spread from human to human ... It's all hands on deck at the moment."

Will swine flu be the new avian flu?

No, swine flu is the new swine flu.

Like bird flu was the new SARS, and SARS was the new swine flu.

Who cares? If I get it, I get it. I'm not going to pee myself worrying over something so trivial.

I've gone cross-eyed trying to read that.

Yes, if you mean it's going to be overblown and not matter in a year.

This seems like a bigger deal than the bird flu. Bird flu never reached the point of human-to-human transmission, while this has.
People are certainly making a big deal of it. My school sent out emails today warning students to beware of flu-like symptoms and to wash their hands regularly, etc. That helped convince me that this might be a big deal.

Believe it or not this is probably the most accurate description since there was outbreak of a previous strain of swine flu in the 70s here in the US. There were PSAs about it and everything.

Well "previous" in the sense that it hadn't evolved into this (actually new) hybrid flu yet.

Not all gone. Just not epidemic anymore.

You know, it is impossible to say whether all the hype caused enough people to get vaccinated that we had a successful stop to the pandemic, or whether it never would have been. No one can know, and both sides use the lack of deaths to prove their point.
