Legal drug dealers. Kind of like your pharmacist. When was the last time one of them was convicted of a drive-by?
But, I don't think legalizing marijuana will have much effect - it's not really what they're fighting over and there are enough pot growers in the US. For them, the real money is probably in crack and coke. Legalize those and you would put a financial strangle hold on the Mexican drug cartels: they would quickly crumble.

I wonder if they said similar things about alcohol during prohibition?

No doubt pot should be legalized. A lot of the Mexican cartels get a lot of their capital from marijuana. The only to stop them completely would be to legalize all drugs, but I don't see that happening. Also, states could tax it to offset recession deficits.

Taking drugs out of the black market would reduce the income and opportunities for black marketeers. Just review the crime rates associated with prohibition.

I think there's a lot of issues that legalizing marijuana would resolve.
People smoke marijuana whether it's legal or not, the only difference is that you're arrested if you're caught.

And the hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars that go into law enforcement, prosecution, and incarceration. Never mind the loss of productivity in the work force and the indoctrination of basically harmless offenders into the world of harder drugs and violent crime while in prison.

There's still cocaine, heroin and meth coming into here.
