I think the media coverage of Twitter is getting ridiculous. I enjoy the site itself as much as I ever did, which is a lot.

Unless you're life is incredibly interesting, the idea that friends/strangers will be interested in all tiny details of your life is very egotistical.
So, yeah, I think it's a bit ridiculous, but I doubt the self-absorbed people that Twitter can be bothered to concern themselves with my opinion.

I don't understand why enjoying Twitter automatically means that you're a self-absorbed person.
I like to read other people's updates. I post my own messages on the rare occasions that I'm away from a computer for a few days so that the people I run communities with online will know that I'm still alive. How is that self-absorbed?

Where did I say enjoying Twitter means you're self-absorbed?
Here's what I said:

You also referred to "the self-absorbed people who Twitter" which sounds a lot like a blanket statement.

Yeah, because the question is looking at Twitter as a whole.
There will be cases like yours where it serves an actual purpose (e.g. letting people know you're still alive), but most people don't use it that way. And most people aren't living really amazing and interesting lives, so their Twitters are dumb as hell.
And if something really interesting happens to someone wouldn't you rather read about it on a blog where they can go into detail?

I read both blogs and Twitter. I enjoy both.

And, again, I don't see how referring to the people who Twitter as self-absorbed is different somehow than referring to people who enjoy Twitter as self-absorbed.

Really?
Reading about other people isn't all that self-absorbed, is it?
Expecting people to read about all the mundane details in your life, on the other hand...

When you're done being deliberately obtuse, you can address what I'm actually saying rather than talking down to me.
And I think posting messages on Twitter is as self-absorbed as posting them anywhere, including a blog or a forum such as this.

Obtuse?
How am I being "deliberately obtuse"?
And I would say that blogs and forums are self-absorbed to an extent, but not the the degree that Twitter is. The difference between Twitter and blogs/forums is that blogs typically require a little more thought and substance. There's just not a lot to say about being bored at work, so most people are going to wait until something note worthy happens before telling people about it. Forums are really just like discussions. Yes, egomaniacs can see forums as the opportunity to just share their opinion, but the opportunity for discussion is so much greater than on Twitter.
Twitter on the other hand limits the amount of characters you can use, so it's not good for sharing really noteworthy news. It's whole purpose is to send out short thoughts/updates with people. It doesn't require the same amount of effort as blogs, so it's easy to

overuse it, and "update" people on every minute detail of one's life.
The thing is, all those minute details are boring. They aren't unique to one person, so thinking they deserve an audience is ridiculous.
And like I said before. There might be practical uses to Twitter, and there might be people who can post concise, deep thoughts, but this question is asking about Twitter in general. And I wonder how many posts are people stating that they are bored. Like anyone really gives a crap.
