The state of California is drowning in debt, and a recent CNN poll claims 95% of people surveyed think the state should legalize marijuana and tax it at $50 per ounce to get the state's budget under control. Do you agree?

You're wrong. People pay more than $100 for an ounce now, so $50 in tax isn't really that much.

But under this (by your example), it would be $100/oz. PLUS $50 tax. So a 50% increase in price, basically.

I'd pay it tax, if it was quality stuff. Kind of a reward to the government for ending the prohibition.

I'm not an economist and I'm especially no expert on the economics of drugs, but it is possible that if pot were legal then the base cost would not have to be as high as it is now. Supply and demand. If it were legal, there would be more supply, so the price would go down. So, the base cost could be lower, meaning the extra $50 in tax would not bring the new cost to that much higher than the current cost.

sure, they need some money just go for it. I am a resident and i pay taxes upon taxes. Yet these nabobs never understand the word called "enough". Legalize all naughty things for a year with a sunset clause.

Around here ounces usually go for $180. I don't know where you buy your weed (if you do), but if you can get it for less than $50 you must be smoking the worst weed in the world. lol

I actually laughed at "You might become an addict from just watching it."
*siiiigh*

$50, ouch. I'd like to see marijuana legalized, but that's the wrong way to do it. There's better and less controversial ways of settling debt. (How about something that teaches the Californians a lesson in financial security? Hmm?)

Ha that was because of YT's rules - can't show people 'taking drugs'. They act like pot kills or something

Imposing high taxes on things that are prevalent illegally isn't necessarily going to bring in much revenue. People will still grow their own and sell it on their own without paying any taxes.
13 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Tuesday 3/10/09 - 12:18:07 PM EST (GMT-5)
^^Perhaps, but I don't think so. First of all, if you consider the dealers POV, he isn't going to sell it tax-free (illegally) unless he can sell it to you for more than he could sell it legally. However, you're not going to pay more than $50/oz more to buy it tax-free. Thus, he would have to raise it by less than $50/oz. If they can sell it for $300/oz legally, or $330/oz illegally, how much does the fine have to be to make this alternative uneconomical for the dealer? Not very much...

As for people growing it themselves, you have to realize that growing a quality product is not easy and requires a rather substantial investment in growing equipment. I doubt many casual pot-smokers are going to take the time and spend the money to grow their own, when they can just buy it at a store.

I don't know anybody that grows their own tobacco. And while I do know many people who brew their own beer and make their own wine, I don't think any of them drink exclusively what they make.

If the dealer were selling it tax free, he could sell it for the same price as legit dealers are selling it for and keep the $50 for himself.

Considering that dealers are currently selling the stuff illegally, why would the possibility of a fine for not paying taxes be an issue? It's currently an all cash business, and receipts aren't usually issued- - it would be very difficult to prosecute a tax evasion case against a street dealer.

People are already growing pot on their own- - they aren't going to get rid of their pot farms if it is legalized.

There are lots of people that already smoke exclusively the pot they grow.

I know a couple of guys that brew all the beer they drink. Back when I was a single guy, I used to be one of them.
