Google is officially denying widespread Internet rumors that its Google Earth software located the mythical sunken city of Atlantis off the coast of Africa. Either that, or Google is totally trying to hide something. Since I always appreciate a nice juicy conspiracy theory, I'm going to go with the latter...

They got the spot wrong.

I don't see why they would hide it if they did find it.

I just google earth'ed it and it came up with a curiously looking grid of ripples on the ocean.

Interesting ... that must have been what the article was talking about; I couldn't find a picture of the grids. It does seem out of place, the landscape around it isn't even close and the squares and lines are pretty much perfect. Hmm..

If you look at the picture and then see the eye altitude, you'd realize that those lines are pretty darn big. If you get Google Earth and do something as simple as putting your fingers on the screen to measure its size, then scrolling over to the nearest familiar shape, would help you realize that it's way, WAY too big to be a city.

Yes. Google is evil.

Geekist thing in the world but accr to wiki the island was 555km by 360 km. The google earth thing is like 200 x 200. It was an island, after all. I don't think it's necessarily the island but it looks kinda cool. Also it would be astounding that the ancient's were so goddamn precise.

Why hasn't someone gone and checked out what all the weird ridges are?

Maybe by today's standards my boy. But in that day and age any multitude of things was possible! Did you know they could churn butter in six hours! Remarkable!

The last line of the article is the best. And totally true.
