Attorney General Eric Holder’s assertion that America is “essentially a nation of cowards” when talking about race has ignited fires across conservative America. During a Black History Month speech, Holder said America must confront race relations head on or risk further polarization.

“Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot, in things racial we have always been and continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards,' Holder said at the Justice Department. "It is an issue we have never been at ease with and given our nation's history this is in some ways understandable.”

As opposed to where? I'll admit that racism runs pretty deep in this country, but it's not like other places are any better. And we did just elect a black guy as president. That counts for some progression.

There's plenty of things America is cowardly about (confronting issues of mixed opinion, for instance) but I don't really see race as one of them, especially in comparison to most other developed nations.

I think the cowards are the ones who seem unwilling to admit that things have improved a lot and instead hide behind their race as an excuse to not make more of themselves.

Isn't the US considered one of the more diverse and racially accepting countries?
