While it was once common for American families to have six, seven or even more children, today the sight of such a large brood makes many people stop and ask a seemingly simple question: Why? Plenty have been asking that ever since the news broke that California mom Nadya Suleman gave birth to octuplets after already having six other young children.

There’s not always a simple reason why people create uncommonly large families. Some parents cite religious or cultural reasons. Some say they just love kids and feel they can provide a big family with a stable, loving home. Some want to help a child in need so they add to their biological families through adoption.

But sometimes the desire to keep having children can be rooted in complex psychological issues dating as far back as one’s childhood. In certain cases, experts say, it can become a compulsion, an obsession or even a “baby addiction.”

Do you think most people who have large amounts of children are addicted to pregnancy and the birthing process?

No. I think most of them are religious and think that lots of kids is God's will.

I agree with Harold. For the Duggars, I know they tried birth control after their first son was born. She had a miscarriage shortly after coming off of birth control, and was so distraught that she swore off birth control from that point on. I believe she felt she had been punished for using birth control.

No. I think wanting children is natural desire; it is also a natural occurrence. Suleman has issues, surely and no doctor should have implanted that many embryos especially in a woman with a past of very successful IVF procedures. But most families with lots of kids are not Suleman.

There are many large families around the country who aren't Nadya or Michelle Duggar with her questionable parenting tactics. But the odd sells. No one will want to watch Mr and Mrs Smith and their 8 kids eat pizza, watch tv and play Monopoly.

no. maybe they just want to have more kids because they like kids so much.

No, but I do think they have a sort of obsession.
