Obama has stared down his opponents and won the first victory of his presidency - he will be able to keep his beloved Blackberry. The Secret Service wanted to take it away because of concerns it could be hacked or give away his location at any given moment. But modifications have been made that apparently make it secure.

"The President has a BlackBerry through a compromise that allows him to stay in touch with senior staff and a small group of personal friends," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said. "The security is enhanced to ensure his ability to communicate, but to do so effectively and to do so in a way that is protected," he said.

He would not explain how it was beefed up, but a report has speculated that it received a "super encryption package" custom-built by the National Security Agency. Obama insisted on keeping the device to ensure he retained a window to the outside world.

Should President Obama be allowed to use his Blackberry?

Anything you let out of your own head onto paper, microchips, or sound waves could be caught by somebody. But you have to do it anyway. Take reasonable precautions and keep living your life, whoever you are.

Not really ... he's the leader of the Free World now, and if he's talking to staff on his Blackberry that could be a major problem. I don't mind it for personal use, although that's still dumb because it can be used to locate him during an attack. But if he's talking to staff on it, that's a security risk no matter how secure they think they've made it.

^^^ If he's talking to his staff on any phone there is a risk. And I'm pretty sure you can track... ANY PHONE.
