President-elect Barack Obama's choice of Rick Warren to deliver the inaugural invocation drew one kind of protest. Whether the evangelical pastor offers the prayer in the name of Jesus may draw another. At George W. Bush's 2001 swearing-in, the Revs. Franklin Graham and Kirbyjon Caldwell were criticized for invoking Christ. The distinctly Christian reference at a national civic event offended some, and even prompted a lawsuit.

Warren did not answer directly when asked whether he would dedicate his prayer to Jesus. In a statement, Warren would say only that, "I'm a Christian pastor so I will pray the only kind of prayer I know how to pray."

Evangelicals generally expect their clergymen to use Jesus' name whenever and wherever they lead prayer. Many conservative Christians say cultural sensitivity goes way too far if it requires religious leaders to hide their beliefs.

Do you have a problem with Jesus Christ's name being invoked during inaugural ceremonies?

Barack Obama draws his strength from his faith. Let him put his commitments in the same hands that have lifted him up this far. You have nothing to fear from a good Christian leader...because a good Christian leader doesn't expect others to live by his/her values; he/she looks to God for strength and respects others' free will, just like God does. (Notice that even God doesn't force us to do it His way.)

^^I totally agree. Just wish Bush didn't have such a crazy view of Christianity. I would be shocked if Barack would say something like 'God came to me in a dream and said to invade Iraq'

People who are "offended" by the mention of God, or Christ, need to get a life.
If there were an athiest being sworn in, it would not "offend" me if athiesm were mentioned.
People who sue over this kind of stuff are just after a quick buck. If they are truly offended by this, they need to be isolated from the rest of civilization, so as not to have their widdel feewings hurt.

So if God comes to you in a dream, you're gonna ignore Him?

People are going to be offended if God is mentioned and they are going to be offended if he isn't. Get over it.

If God were to come to me in a dream, I would suspect it was the burrito I had for dinner rather than an actual vision/visit from Diety.

I certianly wouldn't start a war based on a dream.

Any psychologist knows dreams aren't literal, they are all metaphors. I believe in God, and I believe God guides people to make decisions. But I don't believe God came to Bush in a prayer (what does that even mean, did he SEE God?) and say to kill innocent women and children for oil. I just don't believe it for a second.

What exactly did God say in the dream? From the articles I saw on it, the message was to "help the Iraqi people". God didn't tell GWB to "kill innocent women and children for oil"...

Well that's what his 'help' ended up turning into. While he sat back and watched.

Not really- - where's the oil?

The war in Iraq will be a benefit for the Iraqi people (and possibly for people in all parts of the world) in the long run...
13 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Saturday 1/17/09 - 3:37:14 PM EST (GMT-5)
Either way, it's pretty obvious that the GWB dream wasn't a direct command from God to start a war...

No, if it's just a random prayer that falls in with his belief system - but if it turned into a sermon or a lecture about 'coming to God', I'd find that offensive.
