Day Without A Gay was on December 10th. Members of the LGBT community and any straight allies who wanted to participate were encouraged to "call in gay" to work that day and spend their time volunteering for local human rights organizations.

I would have liked to take the day off work to make a statement. My girlfriend and I both work at the same company. Unfortunately times are tough and any call-offs from anyone would be like asking for termination right now, so I could not participate! Everyone at my knows that we are gay and together. I have flowers on my desk right now because today is our one year anniversary! (I sent her flowers earlier, neither one of us knew the other was sending flowers!) I think we need to do something positive together, but maybe calling off work is a bad idea right now.

No one that I know personally. Besides, calling in "gay" to school? That's not really a protest. They don't really need you there... except for getting a few cents or dollars a day when you're there.

I think, in terms of calling in to school, what was more important was the part about doing a day's work for a local charity.
