Yes, I always thought this to be the case. It really gives us all an unrealistic view of what love should be.

I hate romantic comedies because they are so unrealistic. At least with sci fi movies they don't try to pass it off as how real life should be

No, the study was done by British people. I don't trust a Brit as far as I can throw it.

"As part of the project, 100 student volunteers were asked to watch the 2001 romantic comedy Serendipity, while a further 100 watched a David Lynch drama."
I wonder what they were studying about the David Lynch film.

Wouldn't suprise me...some people take that stuff wayyy to seriously.

Your research is highly persuasive. It makes sense. I'm glad I'm not a fan of romantic comedies.

Romantic comedies are not to blame. Stupidity of humans is to blame. It is no surprise that the stupider humans operate on a set of stupid cliches such as ones that are seen in romantic movies.

Perhaps....but not just romantic comedies, but romance movies and books in general. I think they give people a false sense of what a relationship really is and how to go about having one be successful. A relationship with someone is not just something that happens...work has to be put into it to communicate and keep the spice in it so that it doesn't go stagnate. In movies, it's effortless for them to have a relationship and they're riding off into the sunset with the credits rolling when a real relationship would be hitting sleepless nights with infants and paying bills.

It's kind of like how listening to Coldplay can raise expectations of love too high. as someone very funny like Chuck Klausterman said in a book I read once. um.

Oh come on. I watched Cinderella and now I'm convinced that my fairy godmother will fix every unhappiness in my life ever. I watched The Matrix and now I'm convinced that this is just a dream world run by machines.

I watched (insert movie title here) and now I'm convinced that (insert ridiculousness that only an idiot could believe is true after watching an obviously fake and dramatized movie).

I think movies and music for that matter, give the masses a starting point of how to view the world, as opposed to coming up with your own viewpoints.

Romantic Comedies certainly don't help this problem, but they also give one an idea of who to avoid.

They shouldn't.

If they ruin your relationship, it was obviously weak in the first place.

Not particularly.

If one can't work through obvious communication problems in their relationship, then maybe they are too immature for sexual camaraderie.
Using a favorite movie genre (or hobby, and so on) as the scapegoat for why a relationship is sh*tty is poor judgment.
