At a recent medical conference, a team of radiologists presented intriguing X-ray evidence of a psychological phenomenon - what they believed was a new form of self-injury among teens and adolescents. Eleven out of 505 patients whom the team had treated in more than a decade had inserted objects under their skin in a behavior the Nationwide team labeled "self-embedding."

At the time of the conference, a reporter uncovered two more instances of self-embedding in an Illinois town - two teen girls had deliberately inserted pencils into their skin and broken off the tips - lending credence to the possibility that self-embedding was a growing trend, albeit off the radar. "We know it's elsewhere," says Shiels, who is creating a protected database for medical professionals worldwide to track the behavior. "It just hasn't been discussed and it hasn't been studied."

Do you know anyone who has, or have you, self-embedded?

Dude. Those chicks who broke off pencil tips under their skin are so effing hardcore. I wish I could be half as cool as them. God I just don't fit in anywhere, do I?

That's seriously the stupidest thing I've ever heard of.

I peirced my arm with a safety pin once but breaking pencil tips off under your skin is just messed up.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 12/15/08 - 6:26:02 AM EST (GMT-5)
People keep coming up with new ways to be even stupider.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 12/15/08 - 6:30:37 AM EST (GMT-5)
That's strange.
I've only accidently had things under my skin.
I hate it. I just hate any form of foreign objects or substances going into my body (unless it's food into my stomach). I hate getting shots - not because of needles - but because something is being injected into me...it makes me cringe.

I can imagine that one of my friends has done that, though I've never actually witnessed it. She's deeply depressed. Not emo-trend depressed, she's depressed for real.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 12/15/08 - 6:56:26 AM EST (GMT-5)
If it's real depression and not emo-trend, then she won't be doing silly things like this.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 12/15/08 - 7:10:58 AM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah because really depressed people are so rational.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 12/15/08 - 7:57:38 AM EST (GMT-5)
I have a friend who used to, but she's not depressed, she's just clinically insane.

That's what I was thinking.

No, I haven't. Then again, I'm not
1) Clinically insane
or
2) Constantly vying for attention.

The Doctors are just not up with the times-Body art :Implanting has been around since forever and the kids are just trying to cheaply "follow the crowd" as they are wont to do-

I know one 15 year old that has PHISH implanted on his upper arm-it kind of reminds me of that birth control you stick under your skin-

Linky Poo

i've never heard of it till now.

I would take needles, and stick them under the 1st layer of skin on my fingertips when i was like 8, but I didn't know any better. Nowadays, needles freak me the f*ck out.

Haha I still do that if I have needles around! But it doesn't hurt and it doesn't actually go into your skin enough to hit blood so I don't think that would count. I just loved doing it to freak people out.

My sister had a weird reaction to metal in earrings and the skin started to grow over the back of the earring. So, unless that counts, no.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 12/15/08 - 6:59:52 PM EST (GMT-5)
one time I was carrying a pencil in my pocket. I forgot that I had stuck that bad boy in there tip up and shoved my hands in my pockets. My right hand now has a pencil tip stuck in the base of the index finger.
does that count?
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 12/15/08 - 7:01:55 PM EST (GMT-5)
all right, seriously though, this article is ridiculous. The reporters at this conference are wasting their time and should focus on more legitimate trends that are much more pressing than sticking pencils in your skin. Like, say, I dunno, teen suicide? Or maybe teen pregnancy? Just a thought.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 12/15/08 - 7:04:33 PM EST (GMT-5)
No...? That's really weird. Where are all these f*cked up teens? I don't really see them.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 12/15/08 - 7:13:26 PM EST (GMT-5)
no, I think that youre reallly idiotic to do a thin like that
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 12/15/08 - 7:14:58 PM EST (GMT-5)
Hahaha, silly people. The only time this has happened to me was in the 3rd grade I grabbed a pencil the wrong way and broke off the grafite into my middle finger. It's still visible.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Monday 12/15/08 - 8:21:04 PM EST (GMT-5)
that's messed up...
