Tough economic times have Britons eating their hearts out and swallowing their tongues. Not literally, of course. But offal - or "variety meats," as the food category is euphemistically called in the U.K. - is experiencing a surge in popularity, with sales up 67% over the past five years.

Retail and food experts say that worry over the high cost of prime meat cuts and the economic downturn have more shoppers checking out supermarket offal offerings. At ASDA, Britain's second largest supermarket chain, offal sales were up 20% last month compared to November 2007. Sainsbury's, the country's third largest supermarket chain, is selling 48% more pig livers, 22% more chicken livers and 8% more pig kidneys than it was last year. Overall, sales of offal in the U.K. are expected to reach more than $62 million this year.

Tongue isn't an organ, it's a muscle.

I don't eat heart, liver or kidneys, but I like tripe and haggis.

They were prepared wrong.

They should have been cooked with moisture - stewed, simmered, etc.

Why would that be nasty.

It's as valid a part of the animal to eat as the muscles are. Indeed, the heart and toungue ARE muscles.

Again, why are organ meats any more disgusting than muscle meats?
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 12/12/08 - 3:39:15 PM EST (GMT-5)
I quite like tongue, but that's not an organ, is it...?

I hate liver, and I haven't tried any other part. Unless they sneak those into hot-dogs and spam. Which they probably do. So, I guess I have eaten organs in my time.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 12/12/08 - 4:39:38 PM EST (GMT-5)
Tongue really isn't an organ - nor is heart.

Intestinse are good fried, although a bit chewy.

I don't care for the taste of liver, but some people do.

I haven't tried brains or kidneys - kidneys probably have a more 'meaty' texture, I would guess. I would think brains would have a texture more like tofu - but that's just a guess. They'd probably taste fine if prepared properly.

Prairie oysters (bull testicles) were once considered an aphrodisiac, and a delicacy.

Of course, as a vegetarian, I wouldn't eat any of those things now. But I ate them when I was an omnivour.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 12/12/08 - 4:44:12 PM EST (GMT-5)
no but my dad eats chicken heart and thats all i know about it
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 12/12/08 - 4:47:32 PM EST (GMT-5)
I really can't understand these people who insist that they must eat meat, that humans evolved to eat meat, that it's healthy to eat meat, and then they get all squemish about what kind of meat.

In the wild, the entrails (internal organs - what we're talking about here) are what carnivours eat first.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 12/12/08 - 5:05:02 PM EST (GMT-5)
I remember reading that, in old times, the heart and such were considered the best part of an animal.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 12/12/08 - 5:12:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
That's some of the best stuff. I love offal.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 12/12/08 - 6:07:51 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes, patte (liver). It's delicious.
