i believe the incident with the Native Americans was worst. More specifically, the trail of tears, i'm part Cherokee so the fact that it's part of my history, makes it more tragic, in my opinion.

I think I would agree with that.
Slavery wasn't restricted to just the United States - it has been around for thousands of years.

Holy.... that picture of the slave is in one of my history books! O_O

And yes, I'd definitely say the Native American killings, especially the massacre of defenseless women and children in villages.

You have to put things into an historical perspective, America was just later than most countries in outlawing slavery and its practice was more established there, both reasons why it proved more difficult to change.

The genocide of the native population is far more inexcusable and the bombing that took place in South East Asia in the late Sixties and Seventies ranks as a greater misdeed in my eyes with worse consequences than prolonging slavery for 30 odd years beyond the majority of western industrialized nations.

I hate trying to rank atrocities, because it seems like it always ends up demeaning the one that isn't deemed worse.
Slavery is way up there, from the actual physical horror of the slave trade to more abstract concepts of dehumanizing people. Native Americans were treated badly, too.
In some ways, segregation may have been worse than slavery. Obviously not in all ways, and probably not even in a large minority of ways, but bored mentioned historical perspective, and I'd say slavery wasn't as out of line with its time as segregation was with its time.

Wars belong in the conversation, too. I accept that many were necessary, but the amount of destruction even a just war brings means it deserves a second look, even if it ends up being quickly exonerated.

For that matter, opportunities for war where we didn't step in to help people b/c we had no agenda are sins of omission.

And while it's closely linked to slavery, the American Civil War involved Americans killing each other. There's something unsettling about that, however we might validate it.

The idea of keeping people as slaves just blows my mind. I find it hard to conceive of real people being kept as property, it just seems completely evil to me. How could people do that?

Slavery I don't think was as horrible a crime as people make it out to be, I think the NA massacres are worse

Well there were other countries that had slavery long before us and some still do...It's not really our 'legacy'.

To some people slavery is considered job security.

Its a well known practice in India for poor people to take out an loan and agree to work for the lender in order to pay off the interest on the loan.

They receive housing and food but no payment. They can pay off the loan by other means but then they would have to seek employment to support themselves.

A family member might commit themselves to such an arrangement to fund the means to get the rest of the family out of a crisis or the loan may be to arrange a marriage and the commitment to work provides a ready made life for the married couple. The only difference being that children born to such indentured people are not part of the obligation.

I'm surprised the internment camps created during WWII for Asian-Americans hasn't been mentioned.

The massacre of the Native Americans tops the list, though.

For me, even just some of the other things we've done to black people in this country have been pretty f*cking horrible. I'm thinking specifically of the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment, where we basically let dozens of black men DIE of syphilis while thinking they were being treated for it. We f*cking used them as unwilling, non-consenting guinea pigs to figure out if the disease affected people of different races in different ways. They were even denied penicillin when it became available, so as not to screw up the study.

Our government knowingly and willingly killed these men, going against national and international law. That's Mengele-level sh*t, to me.

I'm not gonna say that's necessarily worse than slavery, but it's pretty darn close, in my mind.

It's very hard to place the top 2 Slavery or Native American genocide. I also want to add to the fact that America just doesn't include the USA by itself in those 2 tragedies. Being 1/4 Native American myself I'm going to honestly be a little biased and say the EXTERMINATION OF THE NATIVE POPULATION was the worst. I know that in slavery 100k plus had died from many causes.
Native Americans now after historical and archeaological evidence suggest that at the time of Columbus discovery place 50 to 60 million inhabitants on the Americas. 95% were killed off by disease from Europe alone. Eventhough unintentional it devastated the population in less than 3 centuries. Now add all the military campaigns to eradicate/move the population on top of that. That's why I rank it #1.
Slavery #2
Internal Wars (all Americas)#3
Raping of Resources #4
Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki #5

Psh, there are so many f*cked up things we've done in the past that I can't even decide. However, I'm 1/somethingth Cherokee, so I'll go with the treatment of the Native Americans.

No, I think killing the Indians and atomic bombs were the worst things.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 12/11/08 - 11:37:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
Why do you people say the atomic bombs are so bad?
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 12/12/08 - 12:25:17 AM EST (GMT-5)
killing the native americans was much worse.
