The terrorists have laptops in their hideouts. Can America afford to have a leader like John McCain, who is just learning how to use one?

Find me something in that article, that absolutely demands from the president to use a computer.

I'm not a McCain supporter but I don't think its a presidential requirement to know how to use a computer.
14 yrs ago - Thursday 9/11/08 - 3:25:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
They also speak Arabic, should a president know how to do that?
14 yrs ago - Thursday 9/11/08 - 3:26:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't see him having to engage in some kind of hacker battle with them, although that would be cool.

I'm not a McCain supporter, but how many presidents do you know that have used a laptop computer?

Um, laptops weren't really around until recently, so that is stupid.

Both Bush and Clinton used computers.
14 yrs ago - Thursday 9/11/08 - 4:11:23 PM EST (GMT-5)
It's not just that he's "just learning how to use computers." He can't check his own email. Imagine that. Obama knows how to conference with his daughters via laptop on the road without having someone do it for him!

14 yrs ago - Thursday 9/11/08 - 4:17:36 PM EST (GMT-5)
Chances are, the president has his staffers checking and filtering through e-mails anyhow...

thats funny

I think the real question is, if the terrorists used laptops in their hideouts to help hijack planes, can we afford to allow people to own laptops? Clearly they are dangerous tools of destruction. And you never know who has dug a cave into their basement.
14 yrs ago - Friday 9/12/08 - 3:13:22 PM EST (GMT-5)
Nope. No. Not at all.
Guess y'all should .. not vote for him.

Yeah. Obama could save money by setting up his own meetings with his Mac, while McCain needs extra staffers.

I mean people made fun of Bush for saying "internets" or "a google" or "dial up" but who cares? Bush probably, like most Americans, had AOL or some dialup before we was in office. He was about average on computers, not a genius, but he probably could check his email and sports scores at the time he was elected in 2000.

Lots of sh*t changed since then, and Bush says old things, but as the president, does he really have the time to learn new terms? Seriously. Bush makes funny quotes about the internet. John McCain doesn't but that's because he doesn't understand it at all.

Um, well computers weren't a big thing until Clinton. So both Clinton and Bush used computers.
And spreadsheets. as an MBA I'm sure Bush used spreadsheets... excel etc for the budget. Abacus/Gun-toting trophy wife '08

Before 1992 it wasn't as big of a deal.

So you're saying that an Obama presidency will increase unemployment?

No. He will hire the same number of people for other jobs that help more... that's a lame argument.

I thought Republicans preferred private jobs?

You guys are really grasping at straws here...

I think you are grasping at straws.

I don't think McCain's ability to use a laptop affects his ability to lead a country. Leadership, policies, planning, persuasion, dedication, reading comprehension, personal drive: all more important. I really don't see how his inability to do work on a laptop has a huge bearing.

And Obama is better, imo, at almost all of those too.

But I think technology is getting more and more important.
14 yrs ago - Friday 9/12/08 - 4:31:15 PM EST (GMT-5)
Technology is getting more and more important, but the president tries to avoid using e-mails when possible (better to keep things off he public record). I doubt that they schedule their own meetings with their PC...

I meant doing a web conference with people. Obama could easily set up a web conference with someone via his Mac. McCain... yeah.

14 yrs ago - Friday 9/12/08 - 5:03:39 PM EST (GMT-5)
So wait how do the terrorist power their cave laptops? Do they have electrical hookups? A generator? You think we'd be able to spot it if they had a sh*t load of solar panels and wind turbines.

Who's he going to set up a web conference with? I doubt that he would even be allowed to do that for security reasons...

Didn't Bill Gates come up with some sort of hand crank powered laptop a few years ago?

14 yrs ago - Friday 9/12/08 - 5:09:18 PM EST (GMT-5)
Haha I have a hand cranked flashlight. If the laptops work as well as that we're probably safe.

I'm sure the White House has private stuff much more secure than anything we use...
