It might sound like science fiction, but the idea of an elevator to space is getting serious traction as experts in different fields gather at Microsoft to talk about the details. Experts are gathering at the Microsoft headquarters to talk about sending an elevator into space along a 60,000 mile carbon fiber ribbon.

Some of the legal topics on tap for the summit include who regulates the elevator and how to insure it. The idea of these experts talking about insurance is an indication of how close this might be to reality. Liftport, a Bremerton company, suggests on its Web site that the system could start up within 25 years.

It's possible that an 'elevator to space' may be functional in as little as 25 years. Would you go on it?

I'd take my chances with a fiery death in order to see space.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Monday 7/21/08 - 11:08:57 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'd do it, but i don't think they'll have anything like that in the next twenty five or one hundred twenty five years
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Monday 7/21/08 - 11:35:37 PM EST (GMT-5)
Isn't that a little, I don't know...impossible? Oh well, If they managed to make one, I suppose I'd ride ir.

if it ever happens...and ALOT of people made it back from this journey... yes i would most definitely go for it!

I thought the space elevator was intended for cargo, not people. I could be totally wrong, but the little I've read about it lately certainly didn't mention it being for use by people.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 7/22/08 - 8:26:24 AM EST (GMT-5)
Hell yes I would.

You're drunk?

I'd take the elevator any day, but in 25 years I'll be dead anyway. Too bad...
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 7/22/08 - 5:20:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
mabey.. sounds fun
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 7/22/08 - 10:46:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yes!! I would love to go into space and look down on Earth. The experience would be absolutely amazing!
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 7/22/08 - 10:49:31 PM EST (GMT-5)
It would get hit by some kind of debris and collapse very quickly.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Tuesday 7/22/08 - 11:03:35 PM EST (GMT-5)
No. I'm scared of using regular elevators-I keep thinking that they might get stuck or break. I wouldn't dare go into an elevator that went to space.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Wednesday 7/23/08 - 1:26:06 AM EST (GMT-5)
This somehow seems like a very bad idea to me.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Wednesday 7/23/08 - 8:07:02 AM EST (GMT-5)
It wouldnt be an elevator but probably an open space ship for every one and with technology that is advanceing it will happen sooner or later... ah were getting old allready. I would go on it.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 7/25/08 - 10:04:00 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'd like to see the moon or mars. Im pretty sure i wont live long enough of course. But i wouldnt go do a reverse bunji jump into space just to see a big blue ball.

so let me get this straight. people in our countries are dieing of aids and cancer and we "dont have enough moneyy" to find a cure. there are children and teens on the streets and homeless who are starving. Manyy cannot find jobs or affordable homes in our countries. And not to mention how manyy things the government should be supporting and donating too such as our education in schools...ect.. but we're going to invent an elevator to space ? wow...

I believe it's privately funded.
13 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 8/3/08 - 6:21:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'd most likely say when I got on it..."Wow ju wow."
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 12/5/08 - 9:17:31 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think the idea of physically connecting the Earth to something that far into space is a bad idea. If it, say, ran on a laser guide or something like that I'd say yes, but with all the debris (including satellites) floating through space it would only be a matter of time before the line was damaged.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 12/5/08 - 9:19:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
That would be awesome. Too cool to be real. It's gotta be bull.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 12/5/08 - 10:00:07 PM EST (GMT-5)
Sure....I doubt I'd be able to afford it, though.
13 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Sunday 12/7/08 - 3:08:01 AM EST (GMT-5)
I'd piss myself. No way.

I find the ocean much more interesting than space. I'd rather see the bottom of the ocean first.

So, this thing will be solid? Will it be something that could be seen all over the world, or potentially cause constant shadow? And a big thing like that sticking out of Earth... couldn't that do something to the rotation? And what happens when it's hit by something? Or it collapses?

No, no, this seems like a bad idea.
