For 95 years, Americans wanting a taste of absinthe had to sneak it in from Europe or Mexico – and risk getting the high-proof herbal liquor confiscated by U.S. Customs.

In May 2007, government officials lifted the ban on the drink once blamed for causing hallucinations and psychosis. A year later, Virginia’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Board approved one brand for sale in the state.

Since June, Kubler Swiss Absinthe Superieure has been appearing on shelves at select ABC stores, including 13 in Hampton Roads. A 1 -liter bottle, the only size available, costs $59.95.

Should absinthe be legal everywhere?

YES! I read from somewhere that it actually does not cause any hallucinations and stuff, and by my experience, I've never had any either... although I drink it a lot. Sometimes a bit too much maybe
It's one of the greatest spirits I've ever tasted!

Yes, I think it should be legal. I've never experienced hallucinations from it. People just need to learn to moderate their drinking.

There is a kind that is legal here in the bars where I live. It's still not the "real stuff' though. And it tastes really gross. I got a shot of the crap one time and it was so gross I sipped half of it and had to give the rest to my friend because it so nasty. It tastes like licorice mixed with various vehicular fluids.

Absinthe is good. It's a shame that the EU laws have limited the amount of thujone to 35mg.

Thujone is the herb that supposedly causes the hallucinations. I've Never had any though. Back in the day when a bottle contained around 100-150 mg, it might have caused hallucinations.

Sure, it's only hurting the person drinking it.

even though i think it should be legal doesn't change the fact that you're comment is wrong. people do stupid things when they're drunk that they wouldn't do otherwise that often hurt other people.

Yeah, but the absinthe you serve is made with wormwood extract, not fermented wormwood. You need to ferment the wormwood to get the neurotoxins out of it/to form. Kind of like how malt extract won't get you drunk if you don't ferment it first.
