DULUTH, Minn. (AP) ? Car accidents and house fires may soon cost Duluth residents more. City administrators are considering charging property owners and drivers fees for police and fire responses.

The city is looking into whether it can charge different fees for residents and nonresidents. If so, fire and vehicle extraction fees would apply to everyone, but only nonresidents would pay to have accidents investigated. The fees could bring in an extra $100,000 per year for the city facing a $4.5 million deficit.

That would hit the poor and those on a low income pretty hard.

It doesn't matter how much the city charges, people would say "I have to pay to call the police? F*ck that."
And as a result, crime would go up because no one would be willing to call the police.

I would say no but there are people who take advantage of things like that and charging would cut down on that aspect. For example, there is a burn ban in our county at the moment. If you are caught burning, you will be slapped with a fine. The forest service decided two days ago that the ban doesn't apply to them (because...it doesn't) and accidentally burned up 95 acres. They should be charged.

I do think emergency services should be free, unless neglected. Who would be the judge though?

how would we charge an anonymous phone call? Would we charge the victims? Such a policy would be so outlandish that, as mentioned above, no one would want to call the police. We would have to resort to drastic measures. I say Batman.

Around here you do have to pay for an ambulance - it's like over $500 for a ride to the hospital. But afaik you don't have to pay police or firefighters.

If they did i would not be the one dialing 911, no matter how badly i was hurt.

I pay taxes through the NOSE for everything! Emergency services are exactly what a city is SUPPOSED to do! If i had to pay for this, i'd move!

i think the necessary ones are ok but if anyone has ever received a speeding ticket in the state of Pennsylvania would know you have to pay even if the 1st responders dont have to come to the scene! it is like 20% of your fine for an ambulance and 15% for the fire dept! i havent got one in a while but i think it remains the same...

Only if you abuse 911. False alarm calls, calling for stupid reasons, etc. Otherwise, thats what taxpayer money is for.
