Considering the New Yorker appeals to the Obama demographic (according to rasputin...sorry rasmussin polls at least), I think its a tounge-in-cheek joke for people who actually support him more than a smear for people who don't. It doesn't offend me, but I've seen better political cartoons. The fist bump flap is ridiculous. Its just giving daps to someone.

The intention of the cover isn't to imply that Obama has ties to Islam. It is meant to be a commentary on the people who believe those rumors. Unfortunately, it is poorly executed. It's an attempt at satire, done very badly.

I think in the end the effect will be positive. What people take away from the news brouhaha about this cover is that it was satire that is pointing out the absurdity of all the right-wing lies.
I don't see how it can be used as a confirmation of the lies.

I think it went way to far. Even if it's satirical, it doesn't seem okay to depict a burning flag.

McCain called this tasteless, so Obama and McCain can agree on _something_.
If this is supposed to be satire over the rightwing lies, it's extremely badly executed.

What may be the most offensive that this question mentions "Islam" instead of "terrorism".

How is that funny? Shouldn't I put my country before a presidential candidate? We all know that Obama is not a terrorist and his wife doesn't strap guns to her back, but how does it ever become okay to draw a picture of our country's flag burning? This is definitely not what our country stands for.

Actually, the fact that we can legally burn the flag if we wish as a form of protest is exactly what our country stands for.

Um..it's just a burning flag. The American flag has become more of a logo than something sacred. I bet you can buy American flag colored vibrators.

Okay..well you proved my point exactly that something that once symobolized our ideals as a country now is something that is shown burning and is nothing more than a "logo."

Again, the fact that we are protected from prosecution for burning the flag as a symbolic gesture of protest is representative of what our country stands for.

Well, it is what it is. Flag burning is legal and it's a very symbolic protest. If it really upsets you to see this depicted, I challenge you to go to WalMart and look at all the patriottic bullsh*t being sold there that's made in China by cheap laborers, probably even children.
Look at those stupid American flag paper plates on 4th of July parties...you throw a greasy hotdog on there with mustard and sauerkraut and then you throw it in the bin. It's such a non-sacred image that it's surprising you get upset by a cartoon depicting the flag burning.
The flag is not what your country stands for. Your country lives for whoring the flag.

Honestly, I'm not offended by it. The person drawing this comic wasn't trying to say they support terrorism, but was trying to insult Obama. I can see how it might be offesnsive to Obama or his supporters, but to me it's like listening in on two people arguing.

I think it would be more acceptible if Americans realized that the cartoon is satirical... it is still in bad taste, but would be more acceptible.
The problem is most Americans are not bright enough to understand the satirical nature of the cartoon... therefore, the cartoon will just reinforce the lies and slander that the Republicans and Hillary Clinton have perpetrated against Obama.

As for the flag-burning thing... o you who believe in God, take not the flag of your country as an idol. Render not worship unto your country nor its flag.
And to the question of patriotism... if patroitism is defined as: putting your country ahead of everything else (as McCain defined it), then this is an abonimation to God... for a believer in God (whether Jew, Christian,or Muslim) nothing must be put ahead of God. To put anything ahead of God is a form of paganism and polytheism. Anything put ahead of God becomes a false "god". O you who believe in God, take not your nation or country as a "god" and put it ahead of God.

Obama IS a muslim.
1. He has a muslim name.
2. He attended a madrassa (a special school for muslims/terrorists).
3. He has admitted in past interviews he is a muslim.
