A lot of kids these days are rude to everyone: old, middle-aged, young. I wonder where their parents are when their little brat is skating around the mall almost crashing into people or making rude comments to passer-bys. Kids these days don't respect anybody.

I know I do but that is because I was raised to.
Parents these days are submissive and make children think that they are equals when they arent. Parents are ment to teach their children not be their friends, there is a point when you stop being a parent and start becoming the friend that they dont HAVE to listen to. If they dont respect their parents what makes you think they will respect any other adult?

When the elder demands the respect or shows that he/she deserves it, yeah they do. But in this day and age I don't think respect is just given for no reason.
Not that I think shouldn't be, just that I think it isn't. Personally I give everyone respect until they do something that shows they don't deserve it anymore. But I think a lot of the youth wait to give it when they feel it's been earned.

All generalizations put aside, elders do not receive the kind of respect they merit. There are some extreme cases that we hear about on the news (the elderly being abused and killed by their children), but common incidents are hardly considered. For instance, teachers are tortured by ungrateful students. Even the most difficult of people deserve a measure of respect that today's youth are selfishly unwilling to pay, and when they reach an age that they expect respect I'll bet that they won't understand why they won't get it.
