In a few days, Francisco Martinez will land in Iraq. For him, Iraq is a kind of perdition, a receptacle for all the dark emotions, anguish and guilt that have buffeted him for the last three years.

When Martinez steps off the airplane, he will be in the country that took his only son, a 20-year-old skateboarder and budding graphic artist whose loss is felt every single day of his father’s life.

Joining the Air Force Reserve, after a 17-year break in his military service, was Martinez’s way of making sense of and coping with his son’s death, a way to remember him by being around young men his age serving their nation.

Is this man who joined the Army and went to Iraq after his son was killed there more of a hero or an idiot?

I just think he is doing what's right by him. I don't think he's stupid for going; it's his own choice though it might not be something I would do. I wouldn't say he is a hero either for doing it, but it is an honourable thing to do.

He is probably avenging his son's death.

Exactly. What is he helping America with? He's only making things worse, like every other soldier there. They aren't fighting for America. Iraq did nothing to America. And probably never would have.

Protecting lives, avenging the one closest to him, politics aside, that is noble.

I think it's silly to find closure and whatnot that way.

I'd say an idiot.

I think walking in his sons shoes for a while might be a way of vindicating himself and help him with his feelings about losing his son. I totally understand why he did it.

If you want to go and invade Iraq you're an idiot and a racist.
