breastmilk is not sex.

No...just helpful. Some women have problems breastfeeding, but still know that breastmilk has better nutrition than bottled formula. I think it's great that people are doing that.

How is that degrading women exactly?

I wouldn't think less of a woman for being *helpful*, of all things.

That equates nursing to sex. That's ignorant and offensive. If you want to criticize her capitalism, there has to be a comparison out there that doesn't make the person saying it look really dumb.

The only possible comparison I'm seeing is the person in question imagining that because breast stimulation is involved, and because so many people think of breasts as a primary sexual characteristic (for the record: they're not) that for her to have ANYTHING to do with her breasts for money must be somehow sexual in nature.

I KNOW, I KNOW! It doesn't make sense. I'm trying to see the other person's point of view, here.

So no, it doesn't.

But if asked by a child, I would, of course, have to say, "I do not believe that a woman who sells her breastmilk to mothers is akin to a prostitute, but I could be wrong." Because to tell a child that you're certain of anything when someone disagrees with you is pure arrogance and hypocrisy, don't you know.

This exactly.

I'd rather women who make excessive breast milk donate it, like a charity thing, but when there's profit to be had, people will use it to their advantage. I'd be leery of diseases unless I had it screened first but comparing it to prostitution is ridiculous.

That's pretty inconsistent with how willing you are to be arrogant and hypocritical in your other assumptions.

Selling breastmilk doesn't degrade women. Associating feeding a baby with anything sexual is degrading to women.

Breast milk isn't f*cking someone.

breastmilk and breastfeeding an infant are asexual activities, it couldn't be farther from being a whore.

I don't think that the intent of the question was to necessarily equate breastfeeding with sex. Prostitution can apply anytime a person is selling their body for profit (assuming that breast milk would be considered to be an extension of the woman's body).

What breast milk has to do with sex is beyond me. It's not selling your body, it's selling your milk. Just like people sell semen or eggs.

...and some people see those actions as "prostituting themselves".

Milk is a direct product of one's body. The woman is using her body to make money, prostitutes use their bodies to make money...

CD, equating it with *PROSTITUTION* is like calling someone a Nazi for asking you not to walk on their grass. It's too far. I understand the sentiment you agree with and you're trying to defend, justify, rationalize, and support, devoid of any sense of human emotion, and it's fine, but the very label is a pretty significant thing in all of this.
I'm thinking that if you claimed someone was like OJ Simpson these days, the 1st thing to come to mind wouldn't be his gridiron accomplishments. Similarly, invoking the image of prostitution is in itself too offensive to expect the point to shine through.

Nice name. Perhaps you should try learning as well.

Hehe...I forgot I'd asked this question here.

For clarification - imo, the people that say that selling one's breastmilk is akin to prostitution, are seriously disturbed and should probably not be allowed in public. That's imo, though. I think that if a woman has the milk to do it, and knows that it will be put to good use, then good for her.

Further, in history, it was common for a woman to offer her own milk to a relative or close friend if that friend or relative couldn't produce enough milk, so to me, the idea is perfectly acceptable.

not really the same is it really

Well considering in history they had wet-nurses who fed and looked after the baby until they no longer needed it... no not akin to prostitution at all.
