No. I'm all for civil rights, but I have a job that doesn't allow me to not speak or call in sick, so I have to talk on that day.

How does being silent help gays, exactly?

It's symbolic, but it won't actually help.

Good time for those doing the harassment to do so without protest really...

I don't see how it's going to help anybody. Maybe you should have been a part of a jumping jack day or something.

That's not cool. Let me harass who I want to harass!
Just for the record, I don't really harass people.

Explaining your position to those that disagree with it will win over more people than taping your mouth shut and making them think you're all a bunch of freaks

I disagree. In today's world of mindless sheep masquerading as people, getting a lot of people to do something visible will have better results on the skeptical portion of the population than rationally explaining your position.
Pick a direction, run madly in said direction yelling "EVERYONE FOLLOW ME" at the top of your lungs (metaphorically speaking)
...and watch the results.

It'll get them to notice. But then what? If a homophobe sees that a bunch of people have their mouths taped shut and it's because gays get abused, do you think they'll care? The only people this is going to effect is those already sympathetic to the cause, which makes the whole thing a big "look at how tolerant I am" circle-jerk.

Mmm hmm mouth-tapers either
A) Want to make themselves feel good or
B) They want positive attention or
C) They want negative attention.
But, regardless...They -do- often get people with no opinion and excess boredom to stop and listen for a minute; I've seen this in action.
Still, they could be doing something useful, like building a statue of me.

It doesn't do anything useful to help gays, so no. It just further separates gay rights advocates and homophobes.

No, but some of my students probably will, and I will support their efforts.
I don't know what else it will do, but these kinds of things raise awareness and make people think, if just for a moment. That's a little something, at least.

Like the 'walk out' my school just had on the anniversery of the Iraq war, I don't see how keeping silent or leaving classes can successfully protest.

Even though I disagree with their method of protest, you've got to start somewhere.

^ I think the futility kind of comes from that it something thats already been started really.
Raising awareness only goes as far as letting people know that there is an issue. I think homosexuality and its standing in society is known by most at this point, so awareness isn't really the issue, its those who stand on a particular side of the issue.
