No, I'd let my kid decide if he/she would want to be a volunteer.

My daughter is 11 and she sings in a girl band, she's been doing Charity concerts since she was 10 but she adores singing and by combining the two, various local charities all benefit, the band is getting a good name locally too.

Yes. It starts with doing such work yourself and bringing your kids along, and explaining to them why it's important to you.

Exactly. That negates any good the kid would have gotten out of the experience. I would encourage it, and offer to do it with him/her, but I'd never force it.

It's not like it's a strange thing - it's the same as community service or the volunteer work most students have to do to graduate from high school.

No but it is an oxymoron, if it's forced it's not longer voluntary, that's why it's called community service, not volunteer duty.

True. But I think if you encourage them to do it, it will become a lifelong habit.

I would encourage it, but it's up to them. It would be good for them, though.

I do lots of volunteer work, so if I ever found a child-appropriate community service event, I would bring them along. I would certainly teach them the value of volunteering early, so in their teens and adult life they would be the kind of person who would choose to volunteer.
